What are Clinical Psychologists?

Clinical psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well-being by facilitating change. They deal with mental and physical health problems including depression, anxiety and relationship problems.

How are clinical psychologists regulated?

The British Psychological Society is the governing body for psychology in the United Kingdom and those registered with them will be able to use "Charterd Psychologist" as a title. However, psychologists will also be regulated from July 2009 by the Health Professional's Council (HPC) who will undertake and monitor the necessary Continuing Professional Development training that a practising psychologist needs to adhere to. Under this new structure a few titles are protected by law, (i.e. that only suitably qualified individuals are able to use) and one of these will be "Clinical Psychologist". There are also guidelines to ensure psychologist are "fit" to provide service; each clinician will need to continue to update their appropriate knowledge base and therapeutic skills.

In addition to being a member of the BPS and a Chartered Clinical Psychologist. Dr Seema Quraishi is also a member of the following bodies:

The Division of Clinical Psychology (a division of the BPS)
Faculty for Children and Young People (a faculty of the BPS)
